Running Record Videos
This first set of videos was interesting and helpful because I have been taught running records and have done them myself, but I was not given different symbols that we had to necessarily use. The symbols/system was very logical and easy to remember. We were shown how to mark omissions, insertions, repetitions, and substitutions.
The second video allowed us to see a running record taking place with a student involved. Besides the actual writing of the running record part, I liked the great example she set as a teacher by going back and actually having a discussion with the student about his reading. After he came to a stopping point, she had him look back at the mistakes that he had made so that he could understand how or why he was making the mistakes. This is such a great way to further the students understanding of the mistakes they may make often throughout their reading. Once students are aware of where or why they are making mistakes they will be able to keep these thoughts and teacher suggestions in the back of their mind and work on them as they continue to read without the assistance of a teacher or mentor.
